Fuego Nuevo

Every fifty-two years, the mexicas (known as aztecs to everyone...) used to celebrate the ceremony of the New Fire (Fuego Nuevo) or "Toxiuhmopolli". The mexicas related the fire with the beginning of all things: the Sun, necessary for life. According to their beliefs, the world as they knew it completed a cycle every 52 years, so the ceremony represented the creation of the Sun and the renovation of the world.
First, they would destroy all their every day tools and the sources of light, to recreate the darkness before the rise of the Sun; then the priests would wear the costumes of the different Gods and would climb the hill Huixachtecatl to perform a human sacrifice and light the New Fire in its chest. If the Sun rised the next day, the world would continue at least for another cycle. The New Fire was used to light the fire in every house of the city.
Toxiuhmopolli was then, a ceremony of renewal.
