Day of the Dead in Michoacan.
The 1st and 2nd of November, Mexico celebrates the Days of the Dead. The vision Mexicans have about Death is part of our pre-hispanic heritage. We set altars for our dead relatives with a few basic elements: water, light, salt and the flower "cempoaxochitl". We also add religious images, the favourite food and drink of the dead person and a picture of him/her. The first of November, we celebrate the dead children, whereas on the second we remember the dead adults.
We believe that they come to visit us and take the essence of what is on the altar for them.
Rather than considering this a sad day, we think of it as a happy day, to reunite with the people we love that has left us.
Many people go to the cementeries to put cempoaxochitl on the graves, pray and spend time with their dead relatives. Michoacan, a region in Mexico, is one of the places where the celebrations are bigger. The people of the island of Janitzio, and island of fishermen, go to the cementery at 12 pm with flowers and candles to pray on the graves.
Traditional of these days are the "pan de muerto" (bread of the dead"), pumpkin sweet, and the "calaveritas" (skulls made of sugar). Death is represented in many different forms: as a rich lady, as a drunken man, as%2
